History

The origins of this marvellous Hotel can be traced back to the 13th century, thanks to the discovery of original internal stonework, which is still visible in the hotel today. The hotel’s name ‘Le Fontanelle’ derives from the pre-existing water fountains and stone ‘fonts’, which were used for gathering spring water. These were renovated and enlarged during the first half of the 19th century utilising existing medieval materials that were found on site. This area, originally a rural Etruscan community, was subsequently occupied by the Romans, then in the early Middle Ages by the Longobard population. Over the centuries ‘Le Fontanelle’ became the property of various owners and was used in different ways, until finally it became a simple working farmhouse. It wasn’t until 1999 that restorations began to transform this ancient building into the luxury hotel it is today.

From Florence:

(two possible itineraries)

1. Take the motorway A1 in direction to Rome and take the exit to Florence "Impruneta".

 

-   Then go on through the motorway to Siena (it's called "Tangenziale") and continue in direction of AREZZO, passing through Colle Val D’Elsa, Poggibonsi, Siena…;

-   Do not exit in Siena, but go always on in direction of Perugia-Arezzo, until arriving at the exit "CASETTA";

-   So, exit and then go on passing through Monteaperti - San Piero on the SP 111, proceeding for Pianella (But DO NOT take for Castelnuovo Berardenga);

-   Arrived at Pianella, turn on the right in direction of Gaiole in Chianti, on the SP. 408, until reaching kilometer number 14.7;

-   At this point, you will find on your left the brown location signpost "FONTANELLE";

-   Turn on the left and go on until you will find the Hotel Le Fontanelle.

2. Take the motorway A1 in direction to Rome and take the exit to “Valdarno”;

-   At the roundabout, take the first exit and proceed on SP 111 in direction of Cavriglia and Gaiole in Chianti;

-   After Montevarchi, at the roundabout, take the third exit;

-   Continue on SP 408 proceeding forward to Gaiole in Chianti;

-   After 24 km, you will find on your right the brown location signpost "FONTANELLE";

-   Turn on the left and go on until you will find the Hotel Le Fontanelle.

From Rome:

-   Take the motorway A1 in direction to Florence and go on for about 177 km. Then, take the exit to Valdichiana-Bettolle-Sinalunga forward Sinalunga;

-   Continue on SS 327, then enter the Raccordo Autostradale Bettolle-Perugia, proceeding on the Raccordo Siena-Bettolle for about 28 km;

-   Proceed on the SS 73 for about 10 Km and exit to "CASETTA-Monteaperti";

-   Passing through Monteaperti and San Piero on the SP 111, proceed then forward Pianella (But DO NOT take for Castelnuovo Berardenga);

-   Reached Pianella, turn on the right in direction of Gaiole in Chianti, on SP 408;

-   Precisely  at kilometer number 14,700, you will find on your left the brown location signpost "FONTANELLE";

-   Turn on the left and go on until you will find the Hotel Le Fontanelle.

2011 Closing Season

Dear Friends and Guests,

The closing of our season is nearly upon us and we would like to take the occasion to thank you all for your trust and for having shared with us all past special moments.

From November 1st 2011 to March 31st 2012 Hotel Le Fontanelle will be closed, but it will be anyway operating from Monday to Friday, at business Italian hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, to respond to all your possible enquiries.

Storia

Le origini dell'Hotel Le Fontanelle si fanno risalire al XIII secolo, in seguito al rinvenimento di una struttura muraria, al suo interno tuttora ben visibile. Il suo toponimo trova riscontro in preesistenti fonti di pietra utilizzate per la raccolta dell’acqua di sorgente. Le fonti furono ricostruite e ampliate nella prima metà del XIX secolo, recuperando i vecchi materiali medievali. Quest’area, che in antichità vide insediamenti rurali etruschi, fu occupata in seguito dai Romani e quindi, nell’Alto Medioevo, abitata da popolazioni longobarde. Nel corso dei secoli, il territorio di Fontanelle ha visto alternarsi vari proprietari, fino a diventare semplice residenza agricola mezzadrile. Nel 1999 è iniziato il restauro per la trasformazione di Fontanelle in un albergo di lusso.

Da Firenze:

(due itinerari possibili)

1. Prendete l’Autostrada A1 in direzione Roma e uscite a Firenze “Impruneta”.

Alla rotatoria prendete la 1° uscita e continuate lungo la strada provinciale in direzione Siena, Colle Val d’elsa, Poggibonsi, Arezzo.

Continuate in direzione Perugia e Valdichiana e uscite a Casetta.

Girate a sinistra e continuate per la strada provinciale 111 seguendo per Pianella.

Arrivati a Pianella, girate a destra per la SP 408. Continuate per 5 km e alla Vostra sinistra -precisamente al km 14,700- troverete un’insegna marrone di località con la scritta “Fontanelle”. A questo punto, girate a sinistra e continuate per 1,3 km. Sulla Vostra destra troverete l’entrata per l’Hotel Le Fontanelle.

2. Prendete l’Autostrada A1 in direzione Roma, continuate fino a Valdarno. Uscite a Valdarno e alla rotatoria prendete la 1° uscita. Continuate lungo la SP 111 seguendo per Cavriglia e Gaiole in Chianti. Continuate per 1 km e superato Montevarchi, alla rotatoria prendere la 3° uscita.

Continuate lungo la SS 408 per 24 km seguendo per Gaiole in Chianti e Siena. Dopo circa 24 km, alla Vostra sinistra -precisamente al km 14,700- troverete un’insegna marrone di località con la scritta “Fontanelle”. A questo punto, girate a sinistra e continuate per 1,3 km. Sulla Vostra destra troverete l’entrata per l’Hotel Le Fontanelle.

Da Roma:

Prendete l’Autostrada A1 in direzione Firenze e percorretela per 177 km.

Prendete l’uscita Valdichiana-Bettolle-Sinalunga in direzione Sinalunga. Proseguite per la SS327; poi entrate nel Raccordo Autostradale Bettolle-Perugia, percorrendo il Raccordo Siena-Bettolle per circa 28 km. Continuate sulla SS73 per altri 10 km e poi uscite a CASETTA-Monteaperti.

Superati Monteaperti e San Piero, continuate sulla SP 62 fino a Pianella. Arrivati a Pianella, girate a destra sulla SP 408. Continuate per circa 5 km e alla Vostra sinistra -precisamente al km 14,700- troverete un’insegna marrone di località con la scritta “Fontanelle”. A questo punto, girate a sinistra e continuate per 1,3 km. Sulla Vostra destra troverete l’entrata per l’Hotel Le Fontanelle.
